Dr. Raj, as his patients like to call him, was born in Edmonton and raised in British Columbia. His father, a physician, nurtured his interest in science at an early age, and his mother, a graphic designer, allowed him exposure to the humanities and art.
At the age of 18, Dr. Bhanwath left BC to attend the University of Toronto where he graduated from the Human Biology program with high distinction. During his time there he spent his free time speaking on the causes of heart disease and stroke to various communities and writing for the small U of T periodical “Juxtaposition”. A chance encounter with a dentist/immunology professor in Toronto was the first inspiration for Raj’s interest in dentistry. It became clear to him quite quickly that the profession was the perfect melding of science, art and engineering, all fields that were of interest to him. In his sophomore year at U of T, he applied to dental school and was accepted into the Doctoral program at New York University in New York City, NY.
At NYU, Raj focused his energy on become a strong general dentist, honing his skills in all phases of dentistry. In his first 2 years, his congenial personality and strong interpersonal skills allowed him to be elected as Class President by his peers.
Following his time in New York, Dr. Raj completed a General Dentistry Residency at Yale New Haven Hospital at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where he was able to further hone his skills, as well as gain experience in the treatment of medically compromised patients in the clinical and O.R. environments.
After a brief stint practicing in Hartford, CT, Dr. Bhanwath moved back to Canada, practicing in Medicine Hat for several years prior to purchasing Downtown Dental in 2014. In bringing his skills to Provost, Raj is lucky to have been blessed with both amazing staff and patients in a wonderful community.
Raj understands that dentistry can be anxiety provoking and different patients present with different problems. Having experienced everything from fillings, to braces, to oral surgery himself as a patient, his goal during his career has been to provide evidence-based dental care in a compassionate and patient-oriented environment.
When not working or attending continuing education to improve his dental skills, Raj spends his time running, road biking, skiing, playing squash and traveling. He also enjoys watching the Oilers (although the past 10 years has felt like punishment) and spending time with his family, which includes his Bulldog, Daisy.

Aylene made her way to Downtown Dental in the fall of 2007 as the patient coordinator. She quickly fell in love with her job, something which our patients can attest to by her consistently enthusiastic approach to each day at the office. Over time, Aylene’s enthusiasm for dentistry led her to pursue schooling for Dental Assisting at NAIT to expand her knowledge of the field. She managed to complete the program, remarkably while also still working full time at the practice. Aylene is married and has 2 amazing boys. As an active family, the Stangs shares hobbies including motocross, sledding, snowboarding and hunting.
Glenda joined the team at Downtown Dental 2 years ago and currently acts as both a patient coordinator and sterilization technician. In her free time Glenda enjoys camping, quadding, and spending quality time with her family.
Dr. Raj is an amazing dentist! He is friendly, knowledgable, and very good at what he does. I have had many dentists in the past, and I can honestly say he is by far the best. He did an excellent job on my fillings, and I referred my entire family to him, all of whom were equally impressed by his thoroughness and his quality of work. I would recommend him to anybody!
