Although permanent teeth are meant to last your entire life, there are numerous reasons why an extraction may be necessary. Some common reasons for extraction include: a tooth that is beyond repair as a result of decay or trauma, a crowded mouth, infection, or risk of infection. Perhaps the most common type of extraction however, is wisdom teeth.
Key Benefits
Crowded mouth: Sometimes we may recommend that you have one or more of your teeth pulled in order to properly align your teeth and bite. This may also occur when your tooth can’t break through the gum because there is no room for it.
Infection: Infection may occur when tooth decay or damage extends to the center of the tooth where nerves and blood vessels reside. Bacteria can enter this area and lead to infection. If your tooth cannot be repaired through root canal therapy it will need to be removed.
Risk of infection: If your immune system is compromised, even the risk of infection may be enough of a reason to have the tooth removed.
Wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth can cause infection, crowding, or decay, and are not an integral structure of your mouth. We may recommend that you have them removed if we believe that they pose a risk to your oral health. Removal is safe and painless!
Some people’s wisdom teeth do not pose any potential oral health risks and will not need to be removed.
There is not necessarily an ideal age to remove wisdom teeth, however generally speaking, the earlier the better.
